Once Ayumu fought off the urge to dismember something, he pried his fingers from the pocket containing his scissors and relaxed against the tree. His mind wandered, sending him into a half-asleep, dreamlike state. Ayumu remembered when he had gotten the news that Chiyo had committed suicide. He'd seen it coming, after his elder brother had died in the car crash. He was surprised she had retained the will to live for so long; he knew she’d held out just for him, waiting until he was safe and sound at Seven Voices Academy. Loneliness gnawed at him; his ears folded down sadly against his soft, jet black hair.
As if on cue, footsteps softly padded on the grass below the tree. Ayumu opened one pale bluish-gray eye, glancing down just in time to see a white haired boy stumbling over the roots of the trees. Maybe if he took off that blindfold he wouldn't trip, Ayumu thought, noticing the piece of leather across the boy's eyes. Knowing the boy probably wouldn't try talking to him, or even notice him for that matter, what with his eyes being covered and all, Ayumu closed his eyes once more and settled back against the tree trunk, thinking about Chiyo and his elder brother.
After a long moment, Ayumu heard a sigh coming from the base of the tree he sat in, followed by a voice speaking. Startled, he jumped about three feet off the branch. He clung to it to keep himself from falling off into the grass below. He grabbed at his large tan hat as it went to tumble off his lap and slapped it onto his head over his twitching ears. Peering down, he saw that the white haired boy was now seated below the tree. He was the one who had spoken. Was he talking to me? Ayumu thought confusedly. I mean, he's not even looking in my direction... His head swung back and forth, eyes darting around, but, upon further inspection, he realized there was no one else around for the boy to be speaking to. I guess he is talking to me, then.
"Not really," Ayumu replied. His voice sounded a bit husky; he couldn’t remember the last time he had spoken to anyone. He cleared his throat. "It's not like I have anything better to do." Even though the boy couldn't see it, Ayumu shrugged. He swung one of his legs over the side on the tree branch, dangling them both over the same side. He added, half sarcastically, "Lurking is a hobby of mine." Ayumu snapped his mouth shut as soon as the words left his mouth. ’Lurking is a hobby of mine’? What if he took that seriously? I’m gonna end up scaring him away for sure! he though frantically. He touched a hand to the bandage covering his true name. He’s gonna think I’m insane, just like everyone else.
